But later on, only buy what you need.About This Software POWERFUL enough for a developer SIMPLE enough for a child VERSATILE enough for any platform! For years, RPG Maker has been the easiest way to make your own Windows PC Roleplaying game. okay, go ahead and get the $25 because at this point you probably don't even know what you want. (That said, if there's the MV stand alone for $20 and MV with 500 things for $25. Spend cash on what you know you can use, not just because it's there. Hell, dropping $30 on 10 songs that you use 9 of is better than $20 on 50 songs you never use. You can, but being expected to program, create art, create music, create sound effects all at once is a tall order.īut I am saying to not just buy art and sound resources because they're cheap, I am saying buy stuff you'll use.ĭropping $20 on one tileset you use is a better use of your cash than $30 on 15 tilesets you never use. Now, I'm not saying don't buy resources and make them all yourself. You also run in to an issue of "You bought it, but so did everyone else" where it doesn't make your game stand out visually over most other people's. One favors a blended, muted color approach, another does a bright, contrast color pixel art style. So you could end up with a lot of Realistic Roman Era Tiles, Manga Egyptian Mythical Monsters, and a bass-heavy rock soundtrack.Įven for the stuff that should match - generic fantasy kingdom #28275 resources - the stuff can still be inconsistent enough in art to be jarring. You have a few problems with them - the art and music resources come from a number of different artists, and are in a number of styles - fantasy, modern, sci-fi, horror, etc. RPG Maker MV (The most current version until MZ comes out.) often sees a price as low as $20.Īdd-Ons/DLC/etc are always going to be a mixed bag. Alternatively the other versions go on sale fairly regularly. This is another one with a Mac version.Īs far as paying for a version, RPG Maker MZ is about to release August 20th, so I would wait for that one.

It's sort of free competition to Unity or Unreal Engine, and until recently had a strong focus on 2d projects. This engine is more complicated than RPG Maker, but if you want to get out of the RPG Maker kiddie pool, it is an excellent way to go. Looks set up to make Paper Mario style games. Haven't used it myself, but it looks interesting. Again, Windows only, so you'll need to find a way around that. It's sort of like a demo version of RPG Maker VX Ace, but there's enough there to mess around with. It's also Windows only, so you'll need to use a VM or something. It actually has some real advantages over RPG Maker itself, but I would say it's slightly less user friendly. Any thoughts? Seems to be so many versions now, so I don't even know where to start given how long it's been since I even thought about rpg maker

Would love to get the full bundle but I wont be able to spend that much for a few months, once I'm working again. Is there a free version, or way to get the old one (on a mac)? I'm not looking to make some incredible game to sell or anything, just want to play around and have something fun to kill some time. Now, I don't mind paying for games, but I'm currently broke and unemployed from covid so I'm priced out of these new iterations. So, I suddenly remembered it today, and was excited to see it still exists. It was free way back when (probably late 90s, early 2000s), and I used to love just messing around making not so great games lol. Huge fan of oldschool, 16 bit JRPG style games, and suddenly remembered this from my childhood. Hey all! Honestly, I had forgotten all about RPG maker since my childhood.
